A "secular Christian" is about as realistic as a square circle. Very fitting for such a ridiculous man to identify himself with such a ridiculous description.

I recall him saying on Have Your Say some years ago, "I'm a cultural Christian in the same way many of my friends call themselves cultural Jews or cultural Muslims. So, yes, I like singing carols along with everybody else."

I don't know the context of this "secular Christian" remark, but I would expect that term has a similar meaning to him.

It's funny that while some Christians demonize him, others seem eager to seize on any remark to claim him for one of theirs.

I don't know that he has. Show your sources, please.

Also, why are Christians obsessed with Richard Dawkins?

Do you know what a SOURCE is? I asked for SOURCES, not to be led to the goddamn library card catalog. Only a lazy thinker uses "Let Me Get That For You" and "Google is your friend" when citing sources. Those sites are for when people ask "What's an equator?" or something equally easy to find out through Google without engaging with anyone in the first place.

Bring me the BOOK you got this from. Walk your lazy butt over to the stack you found the book with your claim and bring it back or write down the specific shelf information. It's YOUR claim, YOU bring the source.

And it seems the word "secular" has been explained to you by others. I'm floored that you needed to ask that when Oxford Dictionary is Your Friend. I consider myself to be somewhat culturally Catholic and many formerly Jewish atheists consider themselves culturally Jewish. So what is wrong with secular Christian?

And why are you people obsessed with Richard effing Dawkins?

Read why he said that Doofy.

"I would describe myself as a secular Christian in the same sense as secular Jews have a feeling for nostalgia and ceremonies" Dawkins.

"Was that so hard?" I guess it was for you, since you did it wrong the first time.

A secular Christian is someone who Jesus will say, "Depart from me thou worker of iniquity. I never knew you".

And did you bother to read what he meant by a secular Christian? Of course not - It is someone with a Christian heritage (He was raised Anglican) who does not believe in any of the supernatural elements of Christianity. He just feels a sense of nostalgia for the ceremonies and the fellowship, as long as it doesn't have anything actually to do with God.

I like his quote from the same article -

"Religion is a cop-out. It is a betrayal of the intellect, a betrayal of all that's best about what makes us human," he argued. "It's a phony substitute for an explanation, which seems to answer the question until you examine it and realize that it does no such thing… It peddles false explanations where real explanations could have been offered, false explanations that get in the way of the enterprise of discovering real explanations."

  • If you read his full statements, he said he would not mind being described as such, in the sense that the ritual of such traditions are familiar. He expressly denied any belief in anything supernatural, and explicitly denied any belief in any deity.

Focus on the "secular" in that title.
