Does diet really matter when it comes to working out?

I know to refrain from eating anything that contains sugar and what not, but I have seen so many different diet plans and have been told so many different things by different people that its almost overwhelming. Logically, shouldn't you be able to achieve the body you want by training super hard everyday regardless of what you eat? It would seem Michael Phelps has proven this to be true.

Also I just couldn't afford to eat like a god everyday due to being a broke college student, only what i can get my hands on.

I do also have a friend training to get into MMA who told me he has no specific diet plan he just eats 4 times a day and does Dips, Push ups, pull ups, ab exercises and jujitsu and he's quite ripped (Think terry crews body type)!

Alittle insight on all of this would be much appreciated

There is nothing wrong with eating sugar.

Added sugars aren't good to have regularly, but that doesn't mean that you can't have them at all or that they are "bad".

If you refrained from eating sugar you would have a pretty miserable diet since that means you aren't eating fruits and veggies (they contain sugar).

Your logic is really messed up. If your diet sucks you wouldn't be working out very well every day. You have to be eating well to fuel your body for your workouts and be taking in enough to recover properly.

Diet is probably THE most important part of getting the body you want. It's very difficult to workout enough to burn up massive amounts of calories, especially for someone who isn't an athlete and is new to exercise. If a newbie went all out they would get injured. So it's very easy to eat far more than you burn in a day if you aren't paying attention to diet.

I have always been a huge exerciser. I run a lot and weight lift a lot, but I've never had the body I wanted until I got my nutrition under control.

Of course it does matter. It's been proven multiple times over by those who make no progress in the gym.

If you eat everything in sight, yes you'll get stronger, but you'll get fatter too and you won't get extra strong by getting fat. You'll simply get fat.

That can work temporarily but if you want to compete or be asthetic or increase your weight to strength ratio, then you'll want to loose that fat by being in a calorie defict
