Why or was the 1990s (America) nihilistic?

I was born in the early 90s so most of the world I was too young to understand but as I'm starting to stretch out in terms of books and movies and seeing writers like Chuck Palahniuk and movies like Office Space I'm starting to see the 1990s as a very nihilistic time. What do you think? I know the Baby Boomers were 40s-60s so the 90s would've been the children of that generation.

This is just something I'm starting to see your opinions are appreciated.

Also I may not have the best section it may dip into history.

Not compared to the 1980s (everything was "me, me, me; it's all about me")

I think you've asked this question before. I remember "Chuck Palahniuk and movies like Office Space". That's a pretty rare phrasing (and an obscure film).
