I believe in God and still fear death. Its the unknown that scares us.

People also need a "father figure", a master, someone in charge. It's comforting that there may be this omnipotent "someone" who has control over us, so then we are absolved of the responsibility of controlling ourselves. The weak minded are like orphans without parents, lost and wandering, unloved and uncared for, so they turn to "God" for guidance and comfort.

False. Other religions originated through the power/influence of satan for the purpose of drawing people away from God.

People created religion but People did not make God, he made us.

First, the universe had a beginning of some sort. Second, there is no observable, repeatable method of creation or evolution. Some hear of an all-powerful being creating the universe and deem it (along with any associations with death and what follows) to be implausible. Others hear of a mysterious explosion (cause unknown) which through an unknown method created a universe and through an unknown process created simple life forms (which through an undefined process proceeds to become more advanced).

Both sides examine the issues and claim that the other is ridiculous. This extends to views of life after death. I personally believe that God created the universe and that there is life after death. However, despite my assurance of eternity, that does not mean that I am fine with the idea of death. To clarify, I do not live in fear of death, but I do not welcome it either. I believe that "religion" was established in early days as a means of studying the works which God has performed and His will for our lives.

You don't have to agree with me, nor could I make you do anything of the sort if I so wished. However, if this has gotten you to consider the existence of God in a new light, then I will consider my writing this to have been a success.

I suspect that the major reason that religions of all kinds have remained wonderfully popular into the 21st century is that (with a few exceptions) they put forward the notion that death is nothing but a step towards eternal life "on the other side".

The truth about death is clear to any rational, clear-thinking person.

It is followed immediately by oblivion...nothingness. No eternal soul, no heaven or hell...just a final sleep from which one never awakens.

Polls tell us that one person in five has the integrity and courage to face that truth, but that four out of five cannot handle it.

Most of the human race lack the character they need to look at death honestly. Religions support them in their escape from reality.

It can be argued of course that if people lack the courage to face death honestly, the church, temple or mosque are doing them a favor by providing them with a comfort that they cannot do without.
