How do midges appear?
There were so many midges in Scotland how do they appear this time of the year? Is it to do with lack of oxgen? Does anyone know if midges appear anywhere else as well as Scotland?

Midges are most active first thing in the morning, and particularly around tea time, when any wind often drops. They like moisture, after or during light rain, or human moisture! Science has it that they are attracted to carbon dioxide, so avoid heavy breathing. If you go for a run, don't stop because they'll get you! Midges don't like the wind, nor do they like bright sunlight. They prefer close overcast warm humid days. There are dozens of species of midges, and they are supposed to exist worldwide. Supposedly there are species that don't bite, and it's only the female that bites. That's small consolation when you're covered in them - and they're biting like crazy.

It's all about temperature. Most mosquito-like flies go dormant in winter. Once the weather warms up enough, they once again become active, and either start to lay eggs or finish the transition from larva to adult, and start to mate. Welcome to summer...
