What is up next on the amnesty front, with the defeat of Eric Cantor this past week?

One of the significant things I noticed while watching the news this past week was the defeat of Majority Leader Eric Cantor by economics professor David Brat in the Virginia Republican primary. Apparently, what loomed largest in this race was the amnesty issue on immigration (often referred to as "immigration reform"), with Cantor sending mixed signals on the subject and Brat signaling clear opposition to it. In a piece that appeared at the American Thinker website, Rabbi Aryeh Spero argued that Cantor's defeat was due to his no longer fighting "the good fight," while at the same time recalling a time when Brat had invited him to speak at Randolph-Macon College, where Brat has taught:

Some are speculating that this dooms "immigration reform" this year, but I for one would not underestimate the Obama administration's determination to get it by any means deemed necessary.

The president of the United States swears to uphold our laws. This president has done anything BUT uphold our laws. He refuses to even follow the constitutional process to change laws and make new ones. I find it difficult to understand how people can discuss politics as usual when it comes to the Obama administration. My suspicion is that the influx of children from Central America may have sealed the fate of Cantor. With no attempt to even keep the drug cartels and terrorists from crossing the border while focusing on children who came thousands of miles being raped and put into cages when they get here is so unconscionable that I can find no words to describe how I feel about this issue. Still the embassies in Central America have not been notified to stop this procession of horrors for these children. This was as much a rejection of Obama as it was Cantor. Where do US citizens fit into their scenario while diseases that we were successful in wiping out of the US are now brought here by people who were duped into coming by this administration being used as political leverage.

This president should be impeached and if Boehner doesn't see this by now, we are in deep, deep trouble for many more issues than just immigration.

Most of the data is showing that Cantor lost because he ignored his district and had ticked off the voters by doing so.

Cantor's loss is going to freeze things in place until after the primaries. Republicans are now afraid to tackle any complex issue for fear that any attempt that could pass both the House and the Senate could cost them their seats. After the last primary in mid-September, Congress is going to be mostly focused on wrapping up appropriations to get out of town to return home for the fall campaign.

If anything is going to happen to fix the problems in the immigration system, it will happen in a lame duck session in November and December.

The liberal media likes to pretend otherwise, but immigration was already dead. There's absolutely no way it's going to pass in an election year. Even in an non-election year it would be doubtful.
