I agree that you can never be too safe. If you use an agency, they will perform a thorough background check on anyone who is representing their company. If you use a website such as Care.com, you can specifically search for users with references, and also request a background check.

In my days as a nanny, I worked for a family who did both a background and CORI check on me. Most nannies will happily comply with your wishes.

With a nanny your child has only one person that they spend most of their waking hours with. That person will be part of what shapes them as they grow up. Safe is one thing that a background check can address only if you are worried about a criminal past or them being so horrible that they get bad references. But is that person the kind of person you want helping to raise your child? In day care, you get professionally trained care givers and there are a variety of personalities and styles that your child will be exposed to. Also, in a daycare...not a home based one...the staff are accountable. With a nanny, they are behind closed doors with your child. My three children were in an excellent daycare and they learned so much about socializing with others, the world, rich experiences, developed friendships, discovered many role models in their teachers....broadened their lives !!!

I think the better option would be for the parents to work different shifts (if the both HAVE TO work) so they can alternate with their own responsibilities of looking after their children. This society is so screwed up that now there needs to be a third parent to care for the child(ren). Smh.

Also, most nannies in my area are from foreign countries so how can a good background check be done?
