Why do people hate music they don't even listen to?

I'm a very open person and I have friends of all colors. Some of them think like me and love music as long as it's good. On the other hand...a lot of my white friends hate rap music just because they dislike something they heard on the radio and can't appreciate the culture. Same with my black friends because they assume rock is devil worship and screaming when in reality both of the sides are wrong. I actually heard someone play a song by All American Rejects and the song was called "devil music" by one of my white friends. I don't know if I was just born with more of an open ear but AAR of all bands was called satanic by one of my friends.

Are we destined to stay divided as two different cultures until we can appreciate something we may not be used to? I'm truly confused because all music takes skill that's why it makes me mad when white people say 'rap takes no skill' and black people say 'rock is just screaming'. So why do people judge something at face value especially music which isn't made for a demographic. Music is made for people.

Should I just distance myself from both groups considering I can't seem to get along with either?

Update:

*called devil; music by one of my black friends

Update 2:

@a. the thing is though they can't hate the music if they don't listen. That's like saying you hate cake and never had any. You may not want to try it but don't say you hate it.

If you hate it you don't listen to it. I love metal and rock. I hate rap music today so I don't listen to it since it all sounds the same. I do like old school rap. Many black people I know hate rap music made today that is too mainstream and they prefer underground rap.

I've watched rap on tv. Have to admit that I don't understand it, some rap has very foul language; and as for the hand and finger gestures; well - I have no idea what they mean. It just look ridiculous.
