Technically, in a matter of ways, I have "combined" them in my own practice. I first studied a combination of Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do, and then studied Goju Ryu, progressing to a good fundamentally standing rank in both schools. Later in life I studied at a school that primarily taught Hapkido, but also incorporated Judo into the schools practices.

So, like I said, in a matter of ways, I train both Taekwondo, Goju Ryu, and Judo, and I've got to tell you, there are many countless similarities in them all. They might not be quite as obvious to others, but after practicing them enough, I can see them clear as day. So for effectiveness, if this is a concern to you, there's no necessity to learn multiple styles. If you study diligently enough, you'll learn everything you need to know.

Of the three if I had to choose one I'd go with Goju Ryu as it's a very complete martial art. Typically Okinawan arts don't have many high kicks as we don't feel that they're very effective. And anyone who is conditioned and trained smart knows how to deal with them. So adding TKD would only benefit in that it would add to the kicking and serve more for exercise than usefulness.

I can see adding some Judo to Goju Ryu as a complement as the extra ground component would be useful. But any wise fighter isn't going to the ground unless they're pulled down and have no choice as it's a very risky place to be. And Goju Ryu like Uechi has a variety of techniques to avoid takedowns.

So yes they can be combined, but there is no practical point in the combinations once you get to the higher levels of training.

As a disclaimer, In my Uechi Ryu training (which has some similarities to Goju Ryu) I've done some ground work to complement what we do, and to better understand those who want to go to the ground. But it only adds to my desire to avoid the ground. I've also thought about adding some TKD classes to work on kicking. But that's more for flexibility than practicality as I find low quick hard kicks very effective, hard to block and downright nasty.

If you ask moronic questions you forfeit the right to put "no morons".

    Yes they can be combined.

Should they be? That's a completely different question, and it depends entirely on the reason for doing so.

    Why would you need to?

You can learn ANY of those arts exclusively and have an equal result - providing the person you learned it from has a correct understanding of his art.

It can but it might not serve much of a purpose to do so.
