My Windows 8.1 different to my girlfriends?
I have recently bought a new laptop, and says the operating system is Windows 8.1. However, my girlfriend also has Windows 8.1, but she has the power button at the top of the Windows app screen (not desktop), and she can close apps via the normal 'x' button in top right corner. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks :-)

Hi there is the version which are special to certain makes of laptop. what is known as the OEM versions. so this might be the reason.
the windows 8 was originally designed for tablet use only.
so some have various different options depending on the laptop and what it does also.

It sounds like you need to install Windows 8.1 Update 1.
