Is preventing suicide selfish?

If a person has had enough, if they don't want to keep on going, is it not selfish to force them to stay alive? Making someone go through misery every day just so that you won't miss them seems tantamount to torture.

Ya, that's a valid point, I think. But it's a tough call because usually suicide is over an emotional state and those can change. So the old cliche is true: suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

    Usually.

Now if you're 70, with a terminal disease and continual pain and no credible reason to hope for any improvement, or something like that, then - that might be different.

There was a movie years ago, maybe The Wild Geese? Where this mercenary soldier missed the plane and it was pulling away with his buds and the bad guys were going to capture him and he cried out for his buds to shoot him. That made sense, because the bad guys were surely going to torture him then kill him anyway. I was young when I saw that and appalled by it, but ya it was the right thing to do to shoot the guy, in that circumstance, and they did.

There can also be a right time for suicide, in my opinion. But it's equally rare as that example, and always appalling to the max, even if the circumstances call for it.

When you commit suicide, you are not thinking rationally and in some ways what you are doing is selfish, yet the position you are in has left you unable to think of anything but the pain you are going through - whether that be physical or psychological. If you knew someone had plans to commit suicide, I think it is selfish to prevent them, yet nobody can be expected to sit back and let a loved one take their life. Offer them support, do everything you can, but sometimes there just isn't any preventing what these people are about to do

If you're so proud of it you write it on your resume.

Committing suicide is also selfish. The person is not showing concern for those who still care for them. I have had thoughts of this kind of thing before and I thought about how the world would be without me. I know a lot of people would be sad. Thinking about them helped me get through it. I think its a good thing to detour them from harming his or herself. They need to go to Church. In my experience African American churches are full of love and absent of judgement.

Preventing suicide is certainly NOT selfish! You are helping them to keep on going and their loved ones would definitely be grateful. Life isn't misery. It's gift that might not be what you asked for, but it's a gift nonetheless. Good luck and best wishes, Hope xox

The true meaning of human life is.... Self Realization....

Love /hate, Good/evil, happiness/sorrow, positive/ negative, virtue/sin, soul/ body, heaven /hell.. are the creations of God.... So, by pure faith in God we can understand our eternal nature... which relates to our soul ....as our soul is the Part and Parcel of..... Supreme Soul "God"....

And sometimes, God test us that How much we trust on Him, how much we Love Him....in specific situation. Do you really think.. God feels happiness when we suffer pain? Not at all. But He expects something from us.... that is "Pure love in Pure Soul"....

Actually, we are spiritual souls but we are in human body. We are from the spiritual world. God has sent us on the earth...only for self realization.. as our souls are not as pure as, they have to be... So, God has given us human life where our body feels happiness as well as suffers pain. Therefore, we souls are here... to achieve... the level of purity and to become pure soul.... we should make an effort to understand the deeper meaning of unconditional love for all living beings.... in every situation....

Moreover, the eternal nature of our soul is to Love God...

Read Bhagavad Gita deeply..... for every answer about the Human life and the Eternal Life...

then it proves cowardice for staying alive, it is fear of death and the constitutional and moral laws that keep us from doing this favor to others...but seeing how most all other lifeforms strive to survive gives one hope that there is a good reason to be alive

I think, It is Just the Selfish "CURIOSITY" , To Change the "TRACK" of the "SELFISH DEGENERATION", For Some time to Prolong the Way of LIFE, TO "CHANGE".
