What Marvel Universe, is the MAIN Universe?

There are different universes, and I am totally confused. I want the universe that I can just get into, reading from different characters, and how those story's go through others. Like Spider-Man joining the Fantastic 4 (if that is part of the main universe).

I am talking about the Universe that had the Civil War. The Main, MAIN Universe. And what are the 5 character(s) or Group(s) I should start reading on? Just to get a feel before I explore other characters or Groups

My advice as a long time comic reader is that instead of getting hooked on specific characters, you should get hooked on AUTHORS. Pick some comics to read and when you find one you really like, check out the author and then go find more by that author.

In comics, the author on a long-running title changes semi-regularly. When they leave, you can stick with the next author for a little while to see if he does good work, but consider finding out where the author you liked went to, and try that book.

As far as characters, the X-title are the most popular, but they have so many books now that it's hard to keep up. Spider-Man is the same way. But both became the most popular for a reason...they're usually the most interesting.

The main universe is designated as the Earth-616 universe.
