Why do some Parents still smoke when they have kids to take care of? (in financial terms)?

Aside from the obvious health problems of second-hand smoke, isn't it irresponsible to smoke when you have kids because its money wasted that could if been spent on their needs & occasional wants??

Kinda selfish ain't it?

In some people's eyes yes it is. I think of it like this though, it is very addictive and not always the easiest thing to kick hence why it is called an addiction. Some people can quit easily but many seem to struggle with it and may never quit. My Grandfather smoked for 48 years before his passing and my grandmother just decided she was going to quit and hasn't had a cigarette for over 30 years. My mother always talked about how even though they smoked she never questioned their love for her and they always provided for her and her sister even with the additional costs the cigarettes were to the family.

I once heard a story of a man who was out and about and he was talking to a man who smoked. He asked the man who smokes "how much money do you spend on a daily basis on smoking". The man smoking responded on how much he spent on a daily basis smoking, the man then responded "you do realize if you stopped smoking for 20 years you could own a Ferrari right"? The man who was then smoking looks at him and says "ok where is your Ferrari"? We all have our things that we spend our money on and yes some of these things may be better choices than others but we waste money, we still choose unhealthy things to do (like the amount of candy we buy, pop, greasy food or whatever) or things that may be dangerous, and yet we still do them. I personally will never smoke but that doesn't mean someone who does is in the wrong or a bad person. Also if you don't like the smoke move to another location so you don't have to inhale as much..... of course with all the other pollution out there in the air I doubt a little cigarette smoke is going to make much of a difference to your health.

I see today's special is; pigeon hole the people that smoke day. There seems to be a plague going around that brings out everyone's negative judgment on any person who smokes. Oh wait; that's not a plague that's the result of government taxing the living hell out of those who smoke so they spend that billion dollars of them creating a plague through media propaganda. I'm sure the ones who smoke are just as upset as you are that a paper and some dried weeds costs so bloody much.

But your pigeon holing is really off-base. Lets see here; movies, TV dinners, recreational vehicles, bungee jumping; actually ANYTHING people spend money on and find pleasurable could fit into your so called "selfishness" description.

That applies to EVERYTHING a parent buys for themselves. The money I spend on a dress? might have been spent on my kids. The money I spend on a bottle of wine or even a bottle of soda? Might have been spent on my kids.

Having kids means a responsibility to take care of them and meet their needs. It does NOT imply spending every cent you earn on them and only them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think smoking anywhere kids can get exposed to it is a good thing. But the money argument doesn't fly unless smoking actually takes away from real necessities.

Smoking is an addiction. Having children is stressful. You're hardly going to quit when stressed.

What I don't agree with is when they smoke near the children, that is avoidable.

It depends on the person and how they see it. I know people who have a mind set of they're the ones harming their body. It doesn't matter to others. Or I also know people that think why should I stop just for them. It's my body.
