Now a days when most of us dont believe in religion , what motivates you to be a good human being ?

Update:

@shibolet Ethics ? Ok, so what being ethical gives you back. You can make more money by being unethical, why does one need to have them. They do no good.

I agree with you that religion is gradually losing its hold on people.... in the materialistic world, it seems fruitless to bind oneself with religion as it almost uniformly runs counter to achieving materialist objectives.

The stark truth is that people are no longer interested in being genuinely good.... all they want to ensure is that they are 'seen' as good or at least 'not seen' as bad. Hypocrisy rules our world today. What most of us are aiming for is to 'look' good so that we can have the cake and eat it too. That happens to be truly fruitful in this materialist world so long as the camouflage lasts and if and when the crunch time arrives, we hesitate little to relieve ourselves of the 'shackles of looking good'. In today's world, the norm seems to be to ignore morals and ethics, ensuring however not to get caught on the wrong side of the Law.

In the longer run though, our basic humaneness catches up with us, especially once we feel we have achieved 'enough' on the materialist side of life, and most people do then turn to some sort of spirituality, goodness, charity, social work etc. because at that stage in life, it begins to seem more satsfying for our own ego.

  • I believe that suffering is not a good thing. Life is more enjoyable without it. I am also aware that I'm not the only living being on Earth. I apply my opinion of suffering on others - I'm sure others prefer not to suffer so therefore I think it is better if they are spared suffering especially if I can ensure by my actions they don't suffer.

I feel pity and disgust for any person who needs religion to keep them from acting as a savage.

    (1) "When most of us don't believe in religion"???

Wrong. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center in 2012. "Nearly one-in-five Americans say they are spiritual but not religious (18%), and about one-in-six say they are neither religious nor spiritual (15%)." That's a total of only 33%, or 1/3 of the population. That doesn't qualify as "most".

    (2) What motivates me is (a) the positive return on the investment and (b) I have a clear conscience and I can sleep at night, and (c) in my line of work, not only do you lose money for being unethical, you don't stay employed at all. . .

Ethics. Usually, the motivation caused by religion to be a good human being is based on rewards. Some kind of good recompense in the afterlife. Rewards to be a good human being is akin to bribe or treats given to dogs to perform well.

Your premise about most people not being religious is incorrect.

I am not religious, but if you do some research you will see that the majority of the world population is religious.

Being a good person and doing good is it's own reward for me. I choose to be happy, positive, kind, and good. I need no motivation and there are others like me I am sure.

A lot of people think being a good person is it's own reward, and do not require a promise in the after life to motivate them to be decent human beings.

Love..compassion..humility..these qualities motivate a person to be a good human being.

Religion is supposed to develop these qualities to make individuals into good human beings. When it has failed to inspire people and develop these qualities it an indication thatthe religion has has lost its vitality. It needs a God's messenger come again to revive its vitality.

Follow your inner voice and develop humane approach to be good human being.

Ultimately that is the God and religion.

Religion is not somebody to be a christian, buddha, hindu or muslim or any other this or that. The religion is to follow your nature. If man can show only qualities which are natural, as are shown by,animals, birds, trees, the earth can become a paradise.Upto now the man-made religions has been against the life, nature against its joy & peace, contributing making a sick humanity

How it makes you feel. If you behave like an aasshole, you feel like an aasshole. That gets old. Plus others treat you that way too. If you behave decently, you feel decent, others see you that way, and a better quality of people warm up to you. It's the most practical of things really. Plus, love requires significant decency.

Common sense tells us that if we treat others in a way we would not like to be treated, and if everyone else did the same, life would suck for everyone.

Personal integrity makes us hold ourselves to a standard we would like everyone to uphold. Lead by demonstration.

Ethics helps us remain out of jail and the morgue.

Self respect is paramount. If you cannot respect yourself, you certainly cannot expect others to. I don’t believe in gods but I do believe in myself. I would not do anything to shame myself. No one can hold me to a higher standard than I do myself.

Love and respect yourself. Peace to you, forever.
