Different types of Brazillian jiu jitsu?

Hi guys, what is the difference between Gracie Barra, Gracie Humaita, Machado and standard BJJ if all lineages can be traced back to Mitsuyo Maeda?

Good question. The differences are very subtle, so honestly I wouldn't get too caught up in what kind of BJJ you're doing. It's very much like Christianity. They all started at one source, and that was the Gracies (Catholicism), but some felt the Gracies were getting a little too greedy and wanting too much money to be affiliated with them, so they started separating and creating their own affiliations (Protestants, Lutherans, etc...)

The only real difference is that the Gracie's still remain really self-defense based, and other affiliations have adopted a more "sport" version of the art. Other than that, as I said the differences are very subtle. You'll learn the same BJJ at Machado's school than you would at Nova Uniao.

    Good luck

That is a tough choice. I love Judo but I am also dedicated to my style of Hakko Ryu Jiu Jitsu. I couldn't give up either one. I gave up Karate so I could put more time into Judo & Jiu-Jitsu.

Because the different instructors changed original Japanese ju jutsu in various ways it is taught and used. So, pick your flavor. They aren't all the same because the business and little things are not the same.

The only true jiu jitsu is the Japanese. Yes, i'm closed minded.
