In Canada, if someone is denied legal aid but still can't afford a lawyer, are charges likely to be thrown out?
....Or does a defendant have to represent themselves??
I know legal aid is meant to provide a lawyer for those who can't afford one but to qualified for legal aid, you have to make under a certain amount of money. In my province, its $1,410/month. If you make over that you don't qualify for legal aid even if you really can't afford one.

The court is saying you can find a way to afford one or at least consult with one if you make over a certain amount.
No, you won't get criminal charges tossed just because you say you can't afford an attorney, while actually being over the limit they specify.

Nope. Any court has financial guidelines as to who QUALIFIES for a free lawyer. The person does not decide "oh, I can't afford it". The bottom line is the bottom line. You make too much, and it is your responsibility to hire someone.

No charges aren't thrown out.

They are pretty much telling you that you can afford one. You will have to defend yourself. Imagine how many charges would be dropped if everyone just said they couldn't afford a lawyer.
