Can I legally shot this gun?

I'm 20 years old, will be 21 in less than a month and am going to purchase my own handgun. My buddies are going to take theirs to the range so I can test them out and see if any spark my interest. My question is, legally am I allowed to take my mothers handgun with me, (registered in her name, it was her fathers before he passed) to the range without her being there with me? I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for the info.

Update:

Obviously I meant shoot, buddy. If you're going to correct grammar, at least make sure yours is right first.

If you live in a free state, it is legal as long as you are at least 18 and the range allows it. If you live in a commy state, it is probably illegal.

Depends on your location. Most places in the USA there's no such thing as "registration" for a handgun, so I'm not sure if you're in another country or you just incorrectly assumed that since your mother owns the gun she has "registration" for it.

Obviously the safest approach is to simply wait a month and go shooting on or after your 21st birthday, just remember shooting ALWAYS happens BEFORE drinking. Guns cleared, stored, and locked before the first drop of booze comes out.

Also, make sure the gun is cleared, stored in a holster case or range bag, and put it in the car as far away from the driver as possible. Most states in the USA consider a loaded firearm inside a car to be a concealed weapon which may require a concealed weapons permit or may be banned entirely.

    ask your local police

It depends on the laws where you live (each state is different) and the rules of the range. Why don't you call the range and see if they will allow it.

BTW: Most guns in the US are not registered. If your moms gun is truly registered than you probably live in a very restrictive state, so the answer will most likely be NO.

We need to know where you live or what the rules of the range are.

I'm 15 and they let me shoot a shotgun at a range, but I had to sign some forms first in case I get injured. They also didn't ask if the gun was mine, they just made me sign some papers and that was the end of it.

Range rules apply. As for Mom's gun? Leave it home.

Where are you? California? France? Zimbabwe? Texas? or New York? Different laws and regulations depending upon where you live. Here in Oklahoma I used to take a handgun with me to the range when I was 18. Dad gave me permission to do so, since it was his handgun.

Depends on the state, but you will probably be fine. Even if you get stopped I dont think most cops will care if you explain the situation.
