Do traditional Christians believe one has to believe in the Bible to be a Christian?

For a reminder the Bible did not exist during the lives of Paul, Peter, James, John, Andrew, Timothy, Luke, etc. While it contains the teachings of the Savior, I feel it is the belief in and following of the Savior Jesus Christ that makes one a Christian. As important as it is, I do not believe believing in the Bible is a requirement. I certainly don't believe believing in that fake trinitarianism mess is required. Denying the Trinity theory is denying that theory, it is not the same as denying Christ's divinity. One can believe in the complete divinity of Jesus Christ and not be a trinitarian.

I agree with you 100%. The Bible is a collection of inspired writings. There are actually more inspired writings than were included in that collection. There have been more inspired writings since.

Paul explains that just as each person has a body made up of diverse parts that all obey the head, so too, the body of the church has a diversity, and all obey Christ at the head.

So I wouldn't say the trinity doctrine needs to be proven or disproven. It simply doesn't matter. Let those who believe it do so. Their diversity may serve a special function. Those of us who have a different understanding also have our place in the body of the church.

What is traditional? The view of what is a traditional Christian varies and is as diverse as the church body.

Whether a person is a Mormon, a Catholic, a Baptist, a Methodist, a Jehovah's Witness, an Eastern Orthodox, etc. they may be equally sincere about following Christ.

Let not the differences in a translation or a choice of books included in a collection divide us against each other.

The OT was the Bible at that time. There is only one kind of Christian. That is a follower of Christ as described for us in NT. The word of God is the most sacred thing in existence.

    The Bible constitutes the only infallible rule of faith and practice (Matthew 5:18; 24:35; John 10:35; 16:12 13; 17:17; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:15 17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20 21)

If you do not have the word of God, you have nothing.

    Short answer- yes.

Long answer- Why the hell do you believe in Jesus if you don't believe in the Bible? The Bible (specifically the New Testament) is a collection of the works written by the apostles. There is zero evidence, outside of the Bible, that Jesus died for your sins. It can be proven that Jesus 1) Lived and died on the cross, 2) People who knew Him in life worshiped Him after his death and 3) People who were enemies of Jesus later worshiped Him after His death. These are the three facts that are accepted by all historians, christians and atheists alike. The logical conclusion from this is that there must be a reason why this happened. Some people conclude that Jesus must have risen from the dead as stated in the BIBLE. Others don't conclude anything, because nothing that makes sense can be concluded. Take a look at what you believe and what you don't believe and see if it makes sense without the Bible.

  • To be a follower of Christ is to be a follower of the Word (Word). To believe in Christ is to believe the Word Christ is the Word.

    Examples

John 18:12 Jesus is the light---Psalm 119; 105 the word is the light

John 14: 6 Jesus is the truth--- John 17: 17 The word is the truth

I could go on and on listing biblical comparisons between Jesus and the word to prove they are the same thing. on top of that John 1: 14 said Jesus is the word made flesh not in the exact phrase but if you read the text you will get the point. The great danger in most Christians life is that too much self interpretation goes on and little dig in God's word for answers. The bible warns continually about private interpretation. Proverbs 3: 5 says to "trust in the lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding" The bible gives continuous warning to people to not trust their own ideas and understanding. His word is one word and whatever the bible says is unchangeable. that bible says Jesus is the word full stop. It's impossible to change that. Anytime we start saying "I believe" and not "the Bible says or the Word of God says" we are in danger.

visit this site for fun resources that help you believe the bible more do the first lesson and you will not doubt that the bible is God's word. Keep seeking for truth you will find it.

The people you mentioned certainly did have the Bible in the sense that they had the Old Testament with all it's laws and prophecies of the Messiah. Also, if you don't want to believe what the Bible (both Old and New) says then why would you want to be a Christian? It's all about Jesus--the hope for Him to arrive, the fulfillment of the hope, His sacrifice, having faith in Him as Savior, and His return to earth as judge and king. Paul said in 2Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work."

While God is not referred to with the word "trinity" in the Bible it does clearly speak of God the father, Jesus as the son, and the Holy Spirit. If the Father and Son were not separate in some way then who was Jesus praying to in Gethsemane? Himself? Also, he said he would send the spirit to be with His followers always. And don't forget: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19

I agree with you on the Trinity part. No scripture teaches a trinity concept, not even one.

Paul, Peter, James, John, Luke and the others had scripture that was extremely important to them during the first century. That was the Hebrew Scriptures aka the Old Testament. Jesus quoted from it many times. Could we just live as Christians with the Hebrew Scriptures only? No. Those scriptures pointed to the Christ.

Those first century Christians mentioned spent the remainder of their lives explaining this Christ, his requirements, his teachings and what it means to be his followers. They wrote these teachings down and they are indispensable to anyone wanting to live a Christian life today. Just as the Hebrew Scriptures canon was complete by Jesus' day, the Greek Scriptures had to be completed after him so we could know who this Jesus is.

Marvel, I believe just as you do, but it seems that I have taken this belief further than you have.

You believe that believing in Jesus as our Savior and following the Savior Jesus Christ makes one a Christian, You also believe that believing in the Bible is NOT a requirement.

You also say you do not believe in the “fake” Trinitarians mess is required. You state, “Denying the Trinity theory is denying that theory, it is not the same as denying Christ's divinity. One can believe in the complete divinity of Jesus Christ and not be a Trinitarian.”

I believe as you believe, but I ask you, why do you not believe that believing in the Bible as a whole is not a requirement, a requirement of whom, men or God. BEFORE YOU ANSWER, let me tell you what I believe. I BELIEVE THAT TO BE A TRUE FOLLOWER OF OUR SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST WE MUST FOLLOW ONLY HIS WORDS, WE MUST BELIEVE IN ONLY THE WORDS HE SPOKE.

JESUS SAID, THOSE WHO FOLLOW HIM ARE HIS (MY DISCIPLES) AND THOSE THAT CONTINUE TO STAY (STUDY) ONLY HIS WORDS SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THAT TRUTH SHALL MAKE THEM FREE.

    ------------------------------------------- MY DISCIPLES INDEED -------------------------------------------------

    Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

    John 8:31-32 (KJV)

    ---------------------------------- WHO ARE CHRISTIANS --------------------------------------

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

    Acts 11:26 (KJV)

CHRISTIANS ARE FOLLOWERS OF PETER, PAUL, JAMES, TIMOTHY, MOSES AND THE PROPHETS.

-CHRISTIANS WERE DISCIPLES OF JESUS BEFORE THEY BECAME FOLLOWERS OF OTHER -

    -------------------------------------------------- CHRISTIANS ----------------------------------------------------------

JUST AS YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED BY OUR SAVIOR TO BELIEVE IN THE THEORY OF THE TRINITY, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE CALLED A CHRISTIAN.

CHRISTIANS ARE FOLLOWERS OF PETER, PAUL, JAMES, TIMOTHY, MOSES AND THE PROPHETS

    Jesus said,

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

    Matt 28:19 (KJV)

Jesus did not say the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost was a Trinity, nor did Jesus call the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit.

HAVE FAITH IN THE WORDS OF JESUS BEFORE MEN CHANGED THOSE WORDS.

First: there is no one category of "traditional Christians". There are MANY different denominations of Christians, and who knows what you mean by "traditional"...

Second: Yes… most Christians believe in the Bible. However, there are many different versions of the Bible, and many different interpretations of Biblical writings. Some denominations believe in a literal interpretation (in my opinion, selectively - when it suits them), and some believe in a more flexible interpretation.

Third: Even within a given denomination, individual Christians may interpret the Bible differently.

No, we Christians believe in Christ (hence the name CHRISTians) and that's what it means to be a Christian. Nothing to do with the Bible, although that is God's word and is a big part of having a relationship with and following Him.

To be a Christian is to be a Christ follower. Since the Bible is Christ's Word, and since Christ was the Word made flesh, to follow Christ is to follow the Bible! Hello!
