Agree or disagree; Multiculturalism and democracy don't work.?

I don't have a problem with other cultures, but the idea of multible social ideas and cultural norms living all together in one society seems to lead to some form of conflict. Take for example, two cultural groups are living in one society under one government. The two groups have no legal boundries preventing them from following their way of life, but the two might, on some level, see the other group as inferior, which will lead to tension. (I believe that man is a tribal being, so he will always be attracted and stick to the social groups that have ties with the individual. Whites with Whites, Blacks with Blacks, etc etc.) If this is not the case, society will try and intergrate the groups together, forcing each other to conform and change to a lesser or greater extent the rules, morals and norms of each other, the result of which, will lead to more tension. This sense of forced tolerance leads to racism, homophobia and general disgust and distrust with other groups and, sooner or later, they will begin to fight over who has dominate influence over society and government. The one government will also try and appease both groups at first, but they won't be able to function, as an act of some sort by the government that appeases one scoial group may/will enrage to other. This leads to the goverment also becoming bias, unable to both function and appease all cultural groups at the same time. Resulting in one group becoming dominant and all others to be supressed or disregarded

  • Most of the time multiculturalism poisons the "host nation". Some cultures just don't mix and some nations are not made for it. The USA and South Africa stand out as being especially immigrant nations (in that it was built up and developed by immigrants). Japan, Korea... they are 95%+ culturally homogenous. I don't think that it would work well here.

As for democracy playing a role... maybe. I'm drunk. Can't think now.

A true story told by a friend - a white Canadian couple and a friend traveled across the U.S. by car. I think it was Detroit, they got sort of lost, and, being thirsty and bit hungry, decided to stop at a bar&grill type of restaurant. They walk in, sit down, and immediately notice everyone staring at them. They were surprised as they didn't understand what was the matter. A patron walked over to them, and asked "You must be Canadians?", they replied "Yes", to which he replied "Alright, we won't hurt you, you can stay and enjoy the hospitality". The "bar&grill" was a purely "black" establishment, when the trio walked in they didn't realize in the U.S. this sort of thing still raises eyebrows and even leads to conflict if one group encroaches upon the territory of another, though coming in peace and with friendship... Point is, yes, people can be territorial and tribal, but it depends upon the culture. Same diverse groups when influenced by different cultures can either mostly find a way to live in harmony, or tear apart at the seams.

I "disagree" - multiculturalism and democracy aren't perfect, but, in a society where everyone is a newcomer, a guest of the First People, none can truly feel like they are encroaching upon other newcomers' territory or vice versa. Uniting the world's nation states into one would likely lead to problems, but, when "guests attend a party" none can actually feel possessive of their particular corner of the room, or feel being deprived of food when other guests help themselves from the rows of tables with treats and h'ordeuvres.

As for government being the cultural arbitrator - again, when newcomers arrive to pursue a better life among all other newcomers from all over the world, many don't seem to look towards the government to make "Johny play with their Ivan", "Johny and Ivan" will play together of their own choice, not per inciting the government to make the other "play"

Multiculturalism and democracy do work (well, as well as any imperfect human invention does), but it depends upon the underlying cultural foundation upon which the two stand, or fall. IMHO

Strongly disagree. Separatism has been tried and found to be ridiculous as well as immoral.

What makes The United States Of America great is the fact that we are multicultural and democratic.

Now. Get back under the rock you crawled out from under.

Any Form of Government will 'work', if, executed correctly, and the 'greed factor' is kept at bay, or controlled to a moderate level.

It is what ever suits the purpose of the 'people' in order to survive.

We've got multiculturalism whether we like it or not. And it isn't going away. So we should focus on trying to make it work as well as possible rather than fantasizing about an Aryan utopia.

    Democracy works.

Multiculturalism works, as long as it is NOT in a colonial framework where Euros feel they are at the top of the food chain. That is not real multiculturalism.

  • Disagree.

The number of racially motivated violent incidents has decreased over time in the US. White people used to lynch blacks and before that, they were slaves.

Similar stats in other developed countries.

However, when two non-democratic states with different cultures border each other, you are more likely to get war. Again, it's all in the stats.

  • Don't know. Neither have actually been tried in a pure form. Most "democracies" are actually republics. And they have had both a high degree of success, and a high degree of failure historically.

But pure democracy has never been used for any substantially-sized government or culture. And "multiculturalism" has so many definitions, it's not really a firm concept.

Democracy has nothing to do with slave rights, racism or homophobia. The Greeks invented democracy and they had 100 slaves for every one citizen.

The idealized state you are calling democracy has never existed, but no society has ever addressed racism or homophobia WITHOUT being multicultural.

So your fear of multiculturalism is the fear of having to share your equality with too many different types of people.

No society can be perfect or ideal.

You could set civilization back hundreds of years. We need to celebrate our differences, not focus on them.
