Why do the masses LOVE average movies?

I'm not trying to sound condescending...

I was disillusioned this year having gone to see the much hyped Godzilla to be completely blown away by its average-ness. I tried once more with the X men movie the following week, same story, yet everyone seemed to loved this one. It wasn't ever about broken anticipations or disappointment, It was simply an average movie ( with its moments nonetheless).

I have vowed not to return to theaters until the release of Boyhood( sometime in September here) of when which I can be assured of fulfillment. I realize this seems to be an issue centered at major releases, but these are the films that are 'breaking'(3D/Inflation/China) box office records and leading discussion.

It's not that I hate (modern)cinema either. I find David Fincher a great reminder of someone refreshingly still working of their own and against the grain, someone whose use of digital capture is unparalleled.

I've seen most of the "blockbusters" this year and just saw Boyhood yesterday and I was blown away by the the sincerity and deepness of the film. Obviously, every film focuses on something such as transforming space robots or growing up (literally) but Boyhood is an epic film in the sense that you have to know the background of the film to appreciate the work done to make it possible. Most films are shot in a few months and it's on to the next project. Boyhood was a series of 12 short films that were melded into one 3 hour thought provoking film. I like most types of films but Boyhood is one that I can relate to and most everyone can relate to so this film leaves a lingering impression

  • Blockbusters sucks the blood of the masses... i hated x men too... man you're just looking at the wrong direction... there is plenty great stuff but it plays hide-and-seek with you

You should maybe read specialized magazine about movies... it can guides you and avoid most of your usual disappointment or maybe try websites (rottentomatoes, allmovies)

Boyhood seems good at first sigh, the director Richard Linklater is well known and is an artist... there's no doubt about it...

I just watched one of his movies last month "A Scanner Darkly"... it was original it was very original

Movies (Hollywood) have realized since a couple of decades that the GLOBAL market is where the money is. Hollywood makes more money on international revenue now than they do domestic, even though movies have always been exported, it was at a later time, one, two years later with no advertising/marketing push. Now premieres are global and heavily marketed overseas.

Due to the booming bussiness of overseas revenue, movies have become increasingly brainless to appeal to a BROADER audience. So simpler dialogues, more special effects, simpler plot, more explosions, scantly clad women and muscle men. Pop music of the moment accompanied with merchandising, endorsement deals, fashion trends etc.
