Advice for a first-time computer builder?

I know the components I need, but not how to actually select them. I want to build it with gaming, image editing (lots of large RAW-format photos), and tethered photography in mind. I know I need "lots of memory" and "a fast processor" and "a good graphics card" but I don't know what any of that really means. How do I identify something as being good, fast, high capacity, etc? Are there certain things I should look out for or avoid?

For RAM, 8GB @1666MHz will do fine.

CPU- AMD A8 or better with Quad core 3.0GHz or Intel core i3 or better quad core at 3.0GHz and a high cache for both

GPU- Dedicated, at least 1GB Dedicated RAM, clock rate at 1.0GHz

A 1TB (1000GB) HDD @7200RPM or a SSD (faster, more trustworthy as no moving parts unlike a HDD but usually more expensive)

pcpartpicker.com is a good website to help you. All the parts you pick will work together.

This one will do fine for both gaming and editing. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/XgFD23 Could be a bit cheaper if you decreased the RAM to around 10GB or so, got rid of the SSD/HDD which ever you dont want and get rid of the optical drive, and CPU cooling as long as you dont plan on over clocking (CPU's come with a stock cooler)

Also one thing to remember before i forget dont cheap out on the power supply, 80+ bronze is the least I'd go, corsair makes good PSU. PSU breaks or fails, it could take your whole system with it.

This is a bit cheaper http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DxxBbv once again to make cheaper get rid of optical drive and 2nd HDD.
