For those of you who watched the movie, you'll know what I mean. The book was literally unreadable to the majority of the population. So why did he try so hard to protect it?

The Bible gave people hope, makes them think and become strong. The oppressors don't want that. The people could rise up and overthrow them. Hey kind of reminds me of right now. Just substitute the political truth of the Obama administration for the Bible.

The Book was the last copy of the Bible in existence, hence why he went to great lengths to protect it and keep it hidden. Aslo Eli is blind, it is never truely revealed though.
