English Ivy question?

Ok, you guys were so helpful with my what's-eating-my-sedum question -- most did not think it is rabbits as I was guessing -- that I'd like to hit you up about what the heck is eating my English ivy? The bites are not higher than 7, 8 inches from the ground (ivy goes about three feet up a fence and tree), look smaller than deer bites, but too large for insects. I am not (yet) familiar with what a slug/snail-sized bite looks like. I guessed rabbits for the ivy too, but would like opinions. Much appreciated.

I would think snails or slugs also but I cant be sure without seeing a picture. Rabbits would eat the entire leaf not just eat holes in the leaf. I always find snails where there is ivy. LIft up some of the bottom runners and look carefully for the culprits.

  • I have a lot of English Ivy…and also a lot of critters around my place. I find most things leave my Ivy alone. Without a photo it’s hard for me to guess what is eating yours, but my first thought would be rabbits or turkeys. Rabbits don’t bother my Ivy (except to nest under it sometimes), and turkeys will pick at it from time-to-time. I guess I’m lucky that my Ivy does ok, but those two possible culprits would be my first guesses.

If it was rabbits, you would have seen rabbits in the vicinity.

Slugs do eat plants, and they would do well in the moist environment provided by the ivy. However, if it is slugs, you should see the characteristic slime trails.

Both brown and white snails feed on Hedera helix leaves, usually at night.

If there are rabbits there is always rabbit ****.

Do others agree -- if there are rabbits, I'm always going to see rabbit droppings?
