The Left are those with s liberal/progressive/radical view of society. The Right are those with a conservative/reactionary view. The Left looks for change in the status quo, while the Right wants to preserve it or to go back to previous situations. I _think_ it goes back to where these parties sat in the English Parliament, but am not certain.

The Leftists are more Liberal and the Right are more Conservative. The names came from the way people sat in the Parliament the Liberals on the Left and the Conservatives on the Right side of the Aisle.

Labels devised to keep people from communicating and finding real compromise. Labels suck because people are not that simple.
