It's very safe compared to US cities. Gun crime is rare.

After a bit of comparing I can see that Wandsworth is probably the safest centralish borough there is, but it is still a lot less safe than some outer boroughs. But if a more central location is important to you I would go with Putney.
Richmond Upon Thames and Kingston Upon Thames are very expensive though, Harrow is more affordable and Sutton and Bexley probably offer the best cheap/safe combination, they are not as far out as you might think, Welling in Bexley is in Zone 4, and is only about 23 minutes from Central London.

London is very safe, it's not going to get damaged by you visiting it. It's been there for 2000 years now, and knows a thing or two about dealing with invaders. They al been through, you know - Britons, the Romans, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, the Vikings, the Normans, the Huguenots, the Dutch, the Germans, and the Americans. And London has survived and is still itself, untouched.

In 2008 Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she would not feel comfortable after dark in Hackney, east London, or in affluent districts like Kensington. Certainly moving around London is not without its incidents, and some get mugged, others raped. Some believe one can avoid being mugged or raped by affecting to be full of confidence, ghusto and local knowledge, one commentator, a woman called Michelle noted, "I've lived in London nearly all my life, and I've wandered it's streets at night, sometimes drunk, and nothing bad has happened to me. If you walk around like you own the place, and as if anyone who bothered you would be easily seen off, that's a form of protection on it's own. If you walk around hunched in fear, flinching at every sound and peering nervously at every passing man, you might as well write 'victim' across your forehead."

Like most other places, it depends where and when you go, and how you behave,
i have lived here for 12 years very safely indeed. It's about using common sense and takeing responsibility for yourself.
Avoid dark quiet streets at night, especially if you are on your own
Don't carry massive amounts of cash or valuables / expensive phone / camera etc and don't keep them in public view.
keep a close eye on your bags / belongings when out and about.
