Should I move to Detroit?

I'm getting Social Security now, but I live right near Washington, DC. Rents are so high that I'm sleeping outside now. I think Detroit housing should be pretty cheap these days because of the situation in the American auto industry.

If I go to Detroit, where, exactly should I look for a place to rent? I'm a single white man.

Take a look at the 10 cheapest places to line on www.kiplinger.com and consider moving there.

I would take a look around for better places to live that also offer the accomodations you look for. Safety is a big one on my list. There are many towns that can offer you better living conditions as well as cheaper rent. I would look for a small town that isn't too far from a large city. I like the theater and such things. I moved far south and the living is cheaper and there is no winter or much of one...but right now I'm sitting here sweating. Rents are high here because of the hot winter season but low in the summer. Check out some smaller towns around you or whereever you really want to live. Be sure there is everything you want close around you...like good grocery stores, entertainment, restaurants and the like. It makes life a lot nicer.

Detroit housing is cheap because no one wants to live there. Most of the city has been abandoned and crime rate is astronomical.
