Is it safe to fly to Chicago?

I was talking to a friend and they started making jokes about "dont get shot down" and "chicago is the kill capitol of america" etc and several people have said its quite dangerous and now im terrified of flying there (which adds to my already fear of flying), is it really that bad? :(

Your friend is a jerk and not very bright. No planes have been shot down over Chicago or anywhere in the u.S. there are neighborhoods in Chicago with high crime rates...what business could you possibly have that would cause you to go there ? Most of city is quite safe...just like any other city. Chicago is safer now than a few years ago, even with the current spate of shootings. people like your "friend" are not well-informed...they just have the stupid idea that it is funny to try to frighten people.

My husband has been flying in and out of O'Hare airport for business his entire adult life. I have flown out of O'Hare on several occasions. There is nothing to fear at O'Hare.

Chicago is a great city to visit. My daughter and I drive there often to walk around, go shopping, visit the museums. We have walked around the Loop area at night. Never had a problem

As with any large major city, there are bad areas, but as Richard said, there would be no reason why you would find yourself in those areas

Most of the city is quite safe. Downtown and most of the north and northwest sides have low crime rates.

There are parts of the south and west sides that have high crime rates, but there is no reason for tourists to visit those areas: there is nothing interesting in those neighborhoods.

WHY are you listening to your uninformed friend? Chicago NOT Baghdad right?

Chicago is a safe city. Stay away from the South side when it gets dark where the gangbangers are fighting over turf & drug wars.

Your friend is lying to you, planes are not being shot down anywhere in the United States.

Why would you have and keep a friend who lies and spreads false information.

If I had a friend who was a liar I would cease to be friends with them immediately.

Yes, it's dangerous if you go in dangerous areas, if you stay in the rich part of the city you can stay (quite) safe, but you have to be careful when you walk or when you are into the train or into the underground or during the evening or night, try to stay in company and don't stay alone, stay in illuminated streets.
