Fish and potato diet.?

My GSD has intestine and food allergy problems. The vet said to put her on just fish and potatoes for 6 weeks until she improves then introduce one food at a time. Does anyone know the quantities of this diet to feed her. Should the fish be raw and what type of fish. How much potato and fish ratio and what is the best foods to introduce after 6 wks. She's under weight now, will she lose heaps more from this? Many thanks.

Update:

Thanks guys but he said one protein and one carbo with no additives. I checked out a lot of the dry food but they come with so many other things in it and he said no.

I would call your vet and get their advice.

But for now I would cook the fish and potatoes. read this http://dogcare.dailypuppy.com/homemade-fish-sweet-...

I would feed your dog slightly more than what you were feeding them in kibble since your dog is underweight. So if you were feeding your dog 2 cups in the morning, and 2 cups at night. I would feed your dog 2.5 cups of the fish/potato food in morning and 2.5 cups at night. If your dog continues to lose weight, add more food, If your dog gains too much weight, cut back.

    Good luck!

I would recommend trying different foods. There are many other "derm" diets besides the fish & potato...ask your vet. There are rabbit & potato, duck & potato, venison, and vegetarian for dogs who can't take the proteins. Many dogs have allergies to processed foods, including the most common proteins of chicken, beef and pork. There is also a food by Science Diet called z/d, it comes in ultra and low-allergen. Whatever you do, make sure to either feed whole food you prepare at home or a veterinary diet, not one you would buy over the counter. They all have too many preservatives. I've started preparing my dogs' food at home instead of feeding only a packaged diet and it seems to have helped some. Also, you can try bathing your dog at least once a week with aloe oatmeal shampoo or chlorhexiderm. Omega Fatty Acids in fish oil caps are good also because they prevent dryness in the skin. Benadryl doesn't seem to work very well, but it might help a little for temporary itching. You can ask your doctor about Temaril-P, which is a steroid but can be used in short intervals to stop itchiness. It is not recommended for long-term use.

Are you sure that the Vet didn't mean a Fish and Potato dog food? If it's ok for your dog to eat kibble, Natural Balance has a fish and potato food. You might want to check that out.

Try buying the small tins of tuna in springwater; some dogs like this especially if they have runny type stool as with some dogs they cant tollerate too much fat in diet only chicken skin not lamb fat. With the potato just cook and mash only about a heap desert spoon if a small dog..

Can you get Royal Canin where you live? If so get some cans of their sensitive gastro-intestinal vet diet. You can also get it in a kibble form. Not cheap but it's well-formulated and it works.

I tried a fish and potato kibble on my dog but it made her gastro enteritis worse, most likely because the protien was too high.

The vet would have meant a kibble fish and potato, and it is exactly what I would recommend purely because I am hearing good results about it.

Just fish and just potato home prepared is no way good enough for a dog and the balance will not be there.

This is the sort of thing he is talking about.

    or a Salmon & potato.

Please call your vet to clarify whether the vet meant for you to prepare cooked fish (never raw, please) and potatoes for your dog or just buy a fish and potato dog food? Ask also if the vet recommends a specific brand or brands of dog food, or how the fish should be cooked.

Along with everyone else, I'm guessing that your vet meant a fish and potato dog food with no extras such as treats, snacks, leftovers, biscuits, etc.
