Rio de Janeiro as a British naval base.?
I see from Lawrence James history of the british empire that Rio de Janeiro is shown as a british naval base on the map of 1850. Do you know anything about this? From what I can find it appears it may have been due to the escape of the king of Portugal with the British navy that resulted in this agreement but information is limited to that. Do you know anything more about this?

to be short...Following Napoleons invasion of Portugal the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil & honoured the British with trading rights etc as reward of their fight against France.

The Portuguese Navy as it was part of a Kingdom could have been called a Royal, and at about that time the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves was based there
