What are some examples of modern day cutting edge technologies?

Question

For class, I have to write a two page paper on cutting edge technologies (technology that's only been conceived within the last year). I've been searching for examples, but have found nothing so far that has substantial information. Does anyone know of anything very modern that may not even be available for the public, at least just a conceived idea. If you think of anything, please try to give me a link describing said technology.

I suppose you could only realistically go by what is announced ths year  it may well have been secretly in development for some time. But try this for roll-up television screens - bringing the world of Orwell a bit nearer:

There are said to be - cars that can drive themselves. Cars that need no drivers! Such that we could get in our car, program the GPS, and sit back and the read the newspaper on the way to work. I find that remarkable but it's said that kind of car has been made and is ready to go but issues of insurance are slowing it down. 
In any case, I'd say that's a cutting edge technology.
