First thing is although the $68 million is the amount that is publicized....only $45 million is guaranteed. Many NFL (and other pro sports contracts) are filled with "fluff"...usually incentives that they will never attain. Regardless, $11 million/year over 4 years is a lot of money. However, it is the going rate for a QB that can actually compete and win football games. The alternative is letting Smith go and trying to attract the Chad Henne's, Ryan Fitzpatrick's, or Kyle Orton's of the league....guys that have a limited ceiling and don't seem to win more than they lose. Or franchise tag him...making Alex Smith unhappy and still paying him the money. Or rebuild with a new draft QB.

To sum it up...good deal for both parties. There just isn't enough quality QB's out there, which drives the cost up to the ones available.

For Alex Smith, he just secured himself $45 million. That's pretty darn good.

For KC, that's still to be determined. Alex Smith was a bust up until he was surrounded by a great team. The past 3 years he's been winning, it's been the same deal: a great defense and a solid run game. Unfortunately, that defense will be worse this season and the offense lost crucial pieces. Soon Alex will have to carry the Chiefs and not rely on teammates as much. That's where it'll have to be determined.

Good deal. Smith is a very efficient QB who fits perfectly in the Cheifs run-first offense. He reminds me of Russell Wilson when Wilson played with the badgers, he was accurate with a good to great arm and was a huge compliment to the Badger run game, rarely turned the ball over, and the only difference is that Wilson had more speed and athleticism. The Cheifs will find future success with him at the helm.

you know everyone is down on smith but for what he brings thats about what the going rate is. 45mill guaranteed . its a bit on the high side but who else can they get? hes a top 15 qb. he's throwing a few more tds keeping the ints low not turning the ball over. hes mobile and can give you the occasional big game. he has been to the playoffs had winning seasons . i would take him over a lot of qbs right now.
