Car key in the ignition, but wont turn. Is the cylinder broken? Call locksmith or mechanic?

01 Mercury Sable LS

Went through basic trouble shooting (cleaned ignition w/pressurized air, key is not bent, moved wheel up and down, tried spare key as well).

When you put the key in and door is open, it still makes the ding-ding-ding noise, so it is recognizing the key somehow.

There was no prelude or potential impacting occurences/causes.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong? Is it a replace the whole cylinder kind of thing? Also would a mechanic be the subject matter expert, or would this be like a triple-A locksmith problem?

Try moving the steering wheel while turning

This may be a solution. I had this problem once too, and i felt like such an idiot when i figured it out. If you can at least turn it on (not started, just on. It wont drive, but you can still use the radio and stuff), then check if its in parked or not. I had the problem and almost broke the key cause i couldnt get it out, and couldnt turn it. Then i realized it wasnt in park.

Just check first, then call a mechanic if it still doesnt work. Hope it helps!

Considering your exact situation, I would suggest you to call for locksmith service. Because the problem which has occurred is related with the key.

Locksmith if you already tried WD-40 & lightly tapping the key in the cylinder while trying to turn it

A mechanic. Sounds like the ignition is gonna have to be replaced. It's a recall on a few GM cars, so yes it can happen!

The actuator is broken. Newer cars has electronics that only turns on with the chip inside your key.

it has to turn to remove the cylinder.

It has to be drilled if you cant get it turned.

turn the wheel. wiggle the gearshift, free it up.

    lube it. push/pull, lift drop.

See if you blew a fuse or it has a safety interlock. read the owners manual to see if you forgot anything.

we used to have to use the brake and have a good blue fuse on these. or follow the procedure in the book.
