How is my essay for word interpretation? The assignment is pick words and interpret why they were used. Any help is appreciated!?
“As ravening fire rips through big stands of timber
high on a mountain ridge and the blaze flares miles away,
so from the marching troops the blaze of bronze armor,
splendid and superhuman, flared across the earth,
flashing into the air to hit the skies.”
A fire is said to be ripping through the woods on top of a mountain just as soldiers are marching off to battle. This fire is described as "ravening". The word ravening is used to describe the fire as a somewhat living entity that devours everything in its path. The soldiers marching off to battle have the same intentions as the fire which is to destroy. The word ravening has several meanings but two of those meanings stand out among others. "Plunder" and "devour greedily" are two meanings that explain why this word was used to describe the fire. The fire greedily devours everything it touches. The soldiers are compared to this greedy fire because they are on their way to destroy and plunder for their own greedy intentions. Thus there is no longer a difference between the fire and the soldiers because both of them wish to destroy for greedy reasons. The line that separates man above all other creation has been blurred because the soldiers have reverted back to savage mindset. The word ravening is chosen because it shows the savagery of the fire and the soldiers and how they are both linked through their natures.
The bronze armor that the soldiers are wearing are said to be "splendid" and "superhuman". The word splendid is used to describe the armor because with the sun glaring down upon the bronze it is perceived as being radiant and shining. The men wearing the armor as see as "superhuman" which means they are above the nature or powers of the ordinary man. In ancient culture, war heroes were likened to gods among men because of the honor they bring upon themselves for winning wars. Ancient gods were considered to be radiant and have superhuman abilities. Therefore by speaking of the bronze armor in this way, the soldiers are being compared to gods. These words describing the armor are used to show the link between heroes of war and the gods.

The essay is not bad; but ravening does not necessarily meed greed or plinder. We have to assume the main reason for the ravening of the army was to destroy the enemy. You might say that the ravaging army plundered and destroyed as a an interpretation of, "To the Victor belongs the Spoils."
Winning came first, to protect the interests of the soldier state. The 300 were radiant and shining and super powerful, but ravaging came first, as the only spoils I can see might be a bent sword or a used shield.
The comparison is OK, but you need nor bring in hypothetical ethics as a part of your reasoning as to why the particular word 'ravening' is used. The fire cleans the clock, as do the soldiers who triumphantly overcome the enemy forces.
