If the Democrats are so pro-1st Amendment, why is Harry Reid pushing "Senate Joint Resolution 19",?
which is worded to abridge the freedom of speech, and the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances?
"SECTION 2.Congress and the States shall have power to implement and enforce this article by appropriate legislation, and may distinguish between natural persons and corporations or other artificial entities created by law, including by prohibiting such entities from spending money to influence elections."
I can't afford a billboard by myself, and this section allows the government to ban me from associating with like minded friends to pitch in to get one for the candidate/issue we support.
And it also allows the political censorship of any associations I may belong to, and can even be used to silence third party political candidates. A political party is an "artificial entity created by law", and all they have to do is ban political parties in a certain election from spending money, and the incumbent is the only one getting any publicity, unless the challenger owns a newspaper.
This amendment can even silence the recall of politicians, since paper costs money.

Please read the proposed amendment. While it does address campaign finance, which would be fine with me as long as it pertained to unions, Bloomberg, and Gates as well as corporations and the Kochs, it specifically exempts freedom of the press from regulation. Of course they exempt freedom of the press, the progressive/liberal majority in the Senate would not want to muzzle their tame mouthpiece. Nowhere does it mention freedom of speech, opening the door for legislation that could do just that. Said legislation could be in effect for an indefinite period of time, even if found unconstitutional later. Think about the affects this could have, don't just focus on Citizen's United, that is exactly what they are hoping for. Think about Mothers against Drunk Driving not being able to raise money to elect candidates that support their cause. Think about cancer survivors not being able to raise money to support candidates who support increasing funds for cancer research. Please think about the possible ramifications and not only what Harry Reid and Smoking Joe tell you, because we all know that politicians (from both sides of the aisle) don't lie.

The congressional website says, " Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to contributions and expenditures intended to affect elections."
I haven't read all the fine print, but it looks like this is to correct the warping of the political process caused by huge contributions by individuals and companies. Can you explain how it affects the right of assembly?

Stop parroting Ted Cruz, and read the bill. It has nothing to do with eliminating the 1st amendment, and is entirely about overturning the 'citizens united' law.

Obviously "The Left" (it goes by many names, such as "Progressive" is not pro 1st amendment.
Their agenda is quite different.
In their world the end justifies the means so they will cite Freedom of expression when those expressing serve their ends but vilify those expressing who do not.
Need I point out that they use the Constitution for toilet paper?
