What is the function of a house alarm transformer?

Update:

I have a house alarm. The transformer singed the walls, and the fire department unscrewed and unplugged it. The fire alarm is still in working order, so what was the transformer for in the first place? Thanks in advance.

The transformer reduces the 110 or 220V line (mains) supply down to the voltage the alarm system uses - around 12 or 24V normally.

The alarm will have battery backup, with one or two batteries in the main box to keep it running for some hours if the power fails.

If that transformer was still in use (rather than a leftover from a previous installation), the system will shut down once the batteries run down, typically half a day to a day after the power went off.

If you need the alarm system working, you should call your alarm engineer to get them to replace the transformer - and possibly fix whatever caused the previous one to overheat.

ps. You may also find that when the alarm panel battery dies, the outside bell or siren starts - they often have their own battery, which is used if they lose the connection from the panel.

That will generally make them sound for 20 - 40 minutes before going flat...

Transformers change the 110 house voltage down to 24 volt which is needed by all the sensors and circuits in the alarm system. I dont know what is happening in your system. You might call the manufacturer check with them.

To lower the voltage so it won't destroy the system.
