how can i use my phone as a modem on my computer for internet?
I put the cd's in my computer. the software is now loaded on the computer. when i plug the phone into the computer, my phone and computer "talk" to each other, but cant get on the net
so how do i use the phone as a modem on my computer

To do WiFi hotspot or USB tethering you need a suitable mobile data plan that allows it to be used for that. Otherwise it is for the phone only (especially if unlimited) and will not allow 3rd party devices to connect to its mobile data (or use it as a dial up modem, which would be quite slow, I think 14.4 kbps).
If you do have a suitable data plan and proper USB driver, tethering should be as simple as connecting USB cable and enabling tethering in phone settings, then the computer should get an IP address through USB automatically (at least my S3 works that way for Windows or Linux, which then automatically uses that instead of WiFi).

Before smart phones and Mobile hotspots, there used to be a product called Snap Dialer which allowed your flip phone to be used as a modem. Those were the days.

Sure, many smart phone can do this ,just open their hotspot..
