Why are the lyrics in "screamo" and other popular emo genres so self-centered and full of pity?
For about 10 years now, I've heard emo music played by many different people and I noticed first of all they always sound like they're sung by teenagers, and many times are, and they're usually pity-party songs and they sing about only themselves and they way they see things.
Why is this the trend now? When I was a teenager things were so different. Could someone explain this, please?

'Emo' music as you call it, is supposed to deal with people in pain. Why judge it? It's just the type of genre. It is especially relatable to teenagers, are they are experiencing a lot of angst, and like to identify with the music they listen to.
But people interpret emo in different ways. There's the stereotypes, such as my chemical romance, then there's what emo USED to be, such as Sunny Day Real Estate. It is just like any other trend or fad; you get hipsters, preps, indie, goth, etc.
I don't see what's so hard to understand.
I'm a teenager, and I do occasionally listen to this 'emo' music, although the term I would give it is post hardcore. However, I usually prefer metal.

Um, that's the whole point of emo, bro. It's supposed to be melodramatic, first-world problems. And emo bands have been like this since the 90s. Listen to Sunny Day Real Estate or Mineral for example. They sound like teenagers because they're trying to. The name emo originated from emotive hardcore because of their emotive vocals.
