They wanted to do several things.
1. Return YA to the original idea of a Q&A site, not a chat and social site.
2. Attract more advertisers
3. Provide some of the features users had been asking to get for years.
It is so much easier now to find real content amongst the chat and socializing as compared to the past, many of us think it is more interesting.

I just saw your question after coming back to yahoo answers after a few months. This sucks, how can anyone find anything?

Unfortunately yahoo has made some unnecessary modifications,but if you want to use the other format go to Canada.answers.yahoo.com.

Because they would be out of a job if they left things alone. You are right, it is not as interesting.
