Is Dale Steyn better than Malcolm Marshall?

I was reading an article that ranked Steyn ahead of Marshall. Couldn't believe it - Malcolm could more or less take wickets at will under just about any conditions. Steyn seems to need getting worked up to do it like that. Anyway what do others think.

He's in the zone with the other great quicks. Agree with the point that the modern game is harder on the bowlers than in the past, so add a difficulty premium for batsman friendly rules, grounds and pitches.

I wouldn't say better than Marshall, but certainly a peer.

A comparison with some other great fast bowlers – Glenn McGrath: avg 21.64/SR: 51.9, Malcolm Marshall: 20.94/46.7, Joel Garner: 20.97/50.8, Curtly Ambrose: 20.99/54.5, Alan Donald: 22.25/47, Sir Richard Hadlee 22.29/50.8, Wasim Akram: 23.62/54.6, Waqar Younis: 23.56/43.4, and Dennis Lillee: 23.92/52 – shows that Steyn statistically matches up with the legendary fast bowlers of the modern game in Test cricket.

Most of the men in that list played when there was a more even contest between bat and ball yet Steyn hasn’t had that luxury, and that he takes a wicket every 42.21 deliveries in Test cricket is a testament to his great skill, and unrelenting desire to win games for South Africa.

All such comparisons are judgment calls; a definitive answer is rarely possible. But I personally would rank Marshall ahead of Steyn.
