In the expression 'pros and cons, 'con' is a shortened version of 'contra', so that the expression means, 'for/in favour of, and against' something.
'con' itself is ALSO a variant, of 'com'. (When 'com' is followed by ' c, d, f, g, j, n, q, s, t, v ', it changes to 'con') 'con/com' means ''together'.
Hence:
commission, commence
but
congress, confide
So 'progress' and 'congress' are not related, not similar, not opposites.
