The government's "war on drugs" isn't working. What's your alternative plan?
If you could pass or repeal drug laws, what laws would those be and why? What would you spend money on? Or if you don't know exactly, throw out some ideas like:
For instance: I would legalize drugs to get it off the black market. The theory is that would stop them from pushing it. Yet, I'd make drugs it illegal to sell so that way business don't advertise or push drugs on us!
This isn't a full proof plan and not sure if they would work. Just some ideas I'm throwing out there. Okay, your turn!
I think all or most of you have very good ideas. I'm going to award one randomly.

gradual legalization starting w/ cannabis & softer drugs -- then moving onto most of the others, so it doesnt come a free for all overnight.
i think they should be taxed & sold by licensed pharmacies to adults -- the money can go towards rehabilitation/mental health treatment
conversely i think illegal drug dealers & their associates should get hefty sentences though -- as they mix their drugs w/ all sorts of crap & don't have issues selling it to kids
once drugs become a high risk/low benefit operation i don't think most gangs will bother w/ drugs.

As one who saw the effects of the present Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 at first hand over a ten year period, I came to the conclusion the least worst answer would be to legalise the whole lot. If someone is so daft as to volunteer for a drug habit (which they all do at first) then I have little sympathy, but I do have sympathy with the victims of the crime that goes hand in hand with the criminalisation of the drug scene.
The stuff is cheap enough and would be better regulated. The money saved from trying to make a failed piece if legislation look as though it might be working could be ploughed back into rehab schemes for those who want to come off the stuff.
Most of the dangers are, I am told, due to what the drug is cut with rather than the substance itself.
The criminals would be out of their sordid business at the stroke of the legislator's pen and therefore far less encouragement for people to start taking drugs. I believe the numbers would fall and crime would be reduced by enough to make it worth a try.

Make Drugs legal. Tax the heck out of Them. And then allow the Addicts to OD & kill Themselves Off- thus making the Country a Better Place for the rest of Us. :)

Heaver fines and mandatory treatment programs and more mandatory testing for schools, government jobs, and contracts.
Legalization does not do away with the black market.
We have a drug problem in this country because we have a permissive attitude about drugs. the truth is that no society will completely get rid of drug abuse, just as none has gotten rid of murder.
