For two students with identical majors, GPA, and experience, the graduate from the higher rated school will make a bit more on average. However, your choice of major has a much bigger impact on your future earning potential than the school you attend. Engineering majors from a state college make more on average than many ivy league non-engineering graduates.

The "Ivy League" as the title clearly states, is a sports conference. A collection of universities that have an agreement as to some of the sports played by student athletes. This not much past that. The "ivy" refers to some older buildings having plants that stick to the side of the structure. There are eight schools in this conference. Once a student graduates from any university, it is the education, personality, work ethic, goals and ambitions and focus as to life that determines the achievement level. A degree is a degree, a certificate of completion of the requirements as to an specific field. In fact, in the USA, the degree LEAST used is a graduate degree, LAW. More people get a degree and then end up doing something ELSE, than any other. Two years ago I had painters do some work in my home. One of the people, both males, had a Master's degree in Psychology. I have an in-law relative that does not have a college degree that has been offered a position at a major hospital on the east coast as director of the IT department. End of story.

If you're looking to be an investment banker you will most likely need an Ivy league degree. For most other jobs a regular college degree is fine. The employer will also take into account the quality of the program that you're in. For example a person majoring in law at MIT is not as impressive as a person majoring in engineering there. Colleges can be very respectable in some fields and not so much in others. Also, if you plan on going to grad school no one will care what undergrad school you go to except your grad school. So don't go expect to get into a Ivy league grad school with an average undergrad school unless you have honors and other impressive stuff. It is possible however to go to an Ivy league grad school from almost any undergrad but you need very impressive credentials at the lower ranked ones.

It depends on your major and what you plan to do with your life. Business majors might want to go to a better university to have more job opportunities and stand out more, since it's a common major. If you plan on going to graduate school it doesn't matter too much since there's the GRE exam and that puts everyone on equal ground. Don't get me wrong though, Going to an ivy league school will help you more than hurt you. But, overall just go with wherever you think you will get the best education, cuz that's what your paying for.

The higher the reputation of the school, the better the recruiting for graduates. Getting a degree from an elite school matters early on in your career. But we are in our careers for a long time and about a decade later it no longer matters. So what's the time scale of your question? A few years from graduation it matters. Ten years from graduation it does not matter.

It's certainly going to help you in your first job. Being from an Ivy or other top school is a big boost. After that, you're pretty much on your own. Your school matters less and less the further you advance in your career.

I don't think its necessary to graduate from an ivy league school, to get a good paying job. The only difference is that if you graduate from an ivy league school, it will be more attention grabbing on a resume.
