You can pick up the manga no problem. You know how in the light novel there are 10 art pages used? Well the author of the light novel also drew them. He also wrote and mostly drew the manga's story as well. There's another artist there to help him keep up the pace and that artist is his wife.
It's as close as you'll ever get between 2 books.
