Liberty was the founding principle of America. It's the reason America fought the revolutionary war.

America is now quite democratic, but was never intended to be. The founders abhorred the concept of democracy because it gave power of the majority over the minority.

Jefferson was probably the most supportive politician in American history to the ideas of liberty (his slave owning notwithstanding). John Adams pushed for and completely supported government control over the people. Adams supported and enforced the alien and sedition acts which essentially said it was against the law to talk bad about the government.

I recommend reading the works of Judge Andrew Napolitano. He is a legal history scholar who focuses on the ideals of liberty. Start with "It is Dangerous to be Right When the Government is Wrong".

America is NOT a Democracy... It is a Republic. "And to the Republic... for which it stands!" Rule #1: Stop listening to the media!
