Where did the watermelon stereotype originate?

I was told the reason why blacks were stereotyped to like chicken because it was the only animal they were aloud to raise on the plantations but where did the watermelon stereotype come from?

Watermelon is actually an African fruit. That's where it originated.

Watermelon itself is good to eat when there is little to no water or it is not easily accessible (since it has a high water content obviously) - such as many places in Africa.

But I think the stereotype comes from when the slave days, when they fed the slaves lots of watermelon to give them the energy so they can still work with no rest.
