Proper gift for the host?
I've always felt that it was proper to bring a bottle of wine the first time you visit someone's home and for the host of any gathering. Is this a custom somewhere or am I just making it up myself? If it is, are certain wines better for certain occasions? What are some good wines to gift? What about homes abstaining from alcohol?

I don't think its custom. Really, its more of a genuine thing. A sign of gratitude by them inviting you to their home. A good wine to gift would be the most popular kind of wine, possibly a Resiling or a locally made wine. Sometimes instead of just a bottle wine, I would either bring a dessert wine, and a dessert or I would do a small cheese and crackers basket or even just cookies for those homes that abstain from alcohol. ....

I often host holiday get togethers. It is proper to bring a $10 bottle of wine to a nice get together as a hostess gift. If they are more wealthy, go a little higher. Anything will be appreciated, trust me. I keep wine in the house so one friend brought me a decorative wine stopper that matches my kitchen. Even bringing a nicely wrapped desert that can be munched on by the hostesses family, like brownies, cookies, etc. (no pies) will be very sweet. If you know them well, just get them a little something you know they will like. I got a kitchen towel set before and also a scented candle. If they are acquaintances, go with wine. Even if they don't drink, they can serve it then at the party. Ask around to make sure they don't have a religious aversion to alcohol in the house
