get the factors of the first and last term

Combine them in a way that you will get the answer similar to the middle term

    Factors of 3: 1, 3

    FactorS of -161: 7, -23 or -7,23

You need to generate the answer 2

Use FOIL method (multiply First term, Outer term, Inner term , Last term)

    3x^2 +2x -161 =0

    (3x + 23)(x -7)=0

    The outer term becomes (3x)(-7) = -21x

    Inner term becomes 23x

Combining outer and inner terms will give you the 2 nd term in the given: +2x

    We need two numbers that sum to 2 and whose product is (3)(-161) = -483. 483 = 3 * 7 * 23, so the numbers are -21 and 23

    3x² - 21x + 23x - 161. Now factor by grouping

    3x(x - 7) + 23(x - 7) =

    (3x + 23)(x - 7) ☜
