    Use the slope formula (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

    (4 - a)/(a - 2) = 3 <-- multiply both sides by (a - 2) to get rid of the fraction..

    (4 - a)/(a - 2) * (a - 2) = 3 * (a - 2)

    4 - a = 3a - 6 <-- isolate one side (I'll isolate left by adding a both sides of the equation)

    4 - a + a = 3a + a - 6

    4 = 4a - 6 <-- I would now add 6 both sides of the equation..

    4 + 6 = 4a - 6 + 6

    10 = 4a <-- divide both sides by 4

    10/4 = 4a/4

    10/4 = a <--- reduce this fraction by 2

    5/2 = a

    The value of a is 5/2 (or 2 1/2 as a mixed fraction or 2.5 as a decimal)

    3 = (4-a)/(a-2)

    3(a-2) = (4-a)

    3a - 6 = 4-a

    4a = 10

    a = 10/4 = 5/2

  • (4 - a) / (a - 2) = 3

    4 - a = 3 * (a - 2)

    4 - a = 3a - 6

    4 + 6 = 3a + a

    10 = 4a

    2.5 = a

    solve for a : [ 4 - a] / [ a - 2 ] = 3...............{ 2.5 }
