    Kathy is wrong. Money changing predates Jesus by centuries. Records as far back as Ancient Athens exist. Jesus and the Bible have nothing to do with banking.

    If you are referring to modern banking, then you can trace the to Medieval and Renaissance Italy. They were set up by families like the Medici's to protect and promote their merchant houses. It wasn't until sometime in the 17th century did goldsmiths get involved. Goldsmiths owned their own vaults to protect their valuable gold and began to offer their secure storage space to merchants and wealthy. Eventually, the goldsmiths began to loan money, based on the amount of gold they held, to customers.

    So, it depends on how you define banking.
