I was in an accident and feel terrible.?

I'm 18, and have had my license for a bit over a year. Today, while I was on my way to drop my sister off at something, I was coming up to a light and I didn't see it turn red. I'm not sure how, but I didn't see the truck ahead of me slow down until it was too late. I ran into the back of an older gentlmens truck. I'm not sure how fast I was going, maybe around 40. Nobody was hurt, and the other guys truck was suffered virtually no damage at all, but the entire front of my moms car, which she let me drive for the day because it's a lot better than mine, was smashed in, and its probably unsalvageable. I had trouble getting my license out of my wallet because my hands were shaking so bad. The officer who came decided not to give me a ticket, saying "accidents happen". I'm not really sure why I'm even telling this to you people. I just feel like such a piece of **** and I'm afraid to drive again, but I know that I'll have to on Monday. Anyone have any stories about their first accident to help ease my misery?

Ignore Douchebag Dimo, you'll be fine.

I've been there and done that at your age, and it does happen. One second everything is fine, then you miss one little detail and it's all crashing metal and twinkling glass. Of course that's going to rattle your nerves, because you just found out how quickly it can happen. I know you heard everyone say it a million times, but that's not the same as actually experiencing it first hand.

You'll be OK. The shock will wear off, not right away but faster than you'd think, and you'll be driving again. After a while, you'll even be able to drive without that ice-cold fear rushing through your veins. It just takes time.

You did a pretty good job. Nobody got hurt or killed, you even avoided getting a ticket, so it's not so bad.

Sure Mom's car is probably pooped, but so what. They build those friggin' things in factories, 300 of them per day, using the cheapest parts available, and they're all designed and built to break down and fall apart little by little. Instead of letting Mom's car wait until everything was falling off it and the engine was gasping for air, you gave it a quick and dignified death. That car should be thanking you.

I did the same thing - my kids were in the back seat -virtually no or very little damage to the truck I hit but it totaled my old celica - a moment of inattention is all it takes and it happens. You will be much more careful going forward - for quite awhile but eventually you will slip into a false sense of security again and may repeat - or near miss for the same reason - that will bring you back in line again.

Don't worry about it - you avoided a ticket and are alive - yeah ma is going to be pissed but she is

for those who answer with " don"t worry about it etc" - you maybe the types that have repeated accidents that cause havoc for us ( the very minority !! ) that have been trained to properly operate a motor vehicle...........I have not had an at fault accident in almost 40 years due to the training I was blessed to have gone thru............I am able to avoid any situations that involve those who say " don't worry about it' !!!
